Spades is a classic trick-taking card game that originated in the United States during the 1930s. Its popularity soared after being included as part of Microsoft Windows in 1992.

Given its widespread appeal, countless versions have emerged across various platforms. Why should you consider our rendition? We've strived to capture the essence of the original game within a compact download.

The primary objective is to secure at least the number of tricks declared before the hand commences. Bids and tricks acquired are tallied for the partnership. Spades descends from the Whist family of card games, sharing lineage with Bridge, Hearts, and Oh Hell. A key differentiator is that spades are always the trump suit, hence the game's name.

Spades Overview:

A standard 52-card deck is employed, with cards ranked from highest to lowest: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.
Players form fixed partnerships of two, sitting opposite their partners. The initial dealer is randomly selected, and the deal rotates clockwise. The cards are shuffled and dealt in a clockwise manner.

Each player bids the number of tricks they anticipate winning. Team bids are combined to determine the total tricks needed for a positive score. Players cannot pass, and bids are immutable once made. A "Nil" bid signifies that the player believes they will not win any tricks. A successful Nil bid earns a bonus, while failure incurs a penalty. The partner of a Nil bidder must still achieve their own bid.

The player to the dealer's left initiates the trick with any card (except a spade, initially). Subsequent players must follow suit if possible; otherwise, they may play any card.
A trick containing a spade is won by the highest spade played. If no spade is played, the trick is won by the highest card of the led suit. The trick winner leads the next trick. Spades cannot be led until a spade has been played previously, or the leader holds only spades.

A team achieving their bid scores 10 points per bid trick. Excess tricks (bags) are worth one point each. Accumulating 10 or more bags over multiple deals results in a 100-point deduction. Bags beyond 10 carry over to the next cycle. Failing to meet the bid results in a 10-point loss per bid trick. A successful Nil bid earns the team 100 points, plus the partner's score. A failed Nil bid costs the team 100 points, while the partner's bid is still scored.

Typically, tricks won by a failed Nil bidder don't contribute to the partner's bid but count as bags. The first team to reach 500 points wins the game.
