Understanding Split APKs
At Google I/O in mid-2018, Google introduced a dynamic app delivery format known as App Bundles. For a visual explanation, refer to the AndroidPolice post; it simplifies the concept.
In essence, App Bundles shift the responsibility of managing different app variants to Google. Previously, developers created either a single large APK or manually handled multiple APK variants (e.g., arm64 320dpi, x86 320dpi, arm64 640dpi). With App Bundles, Google splits the app release into smaller parts called split APKs. A release may consist of a base APK and several APK splits.
For instance, a single release might be delivered as five files: base.apk + arm64.split.apk + 320dpi.split.apk + en-us.lang.split.apk + es-es.lang.split.apk.
These APK splits cannot be installed individually by tapping on them; only the base APK can be installed directly, but doing so will cause the app to crash due to missing resources.
APKMirror Installer addresses this limitation.
What are .apkm Files?
As apps increasingly adopt the split APK format, APKMirror developed a solution to facilitate easy and safe sideloading. The .apkm file format adapts to these changes and enables users to continue installing apps without complications.
Each .apkm file contains a base APK and multiple split APKs. After installing APKMirror Installer, simply tap the downloaded .apkm file or use the installer to locate it. You can view the contents of each .apkm file and select the specific splits to install, optimizing storage space on your device.
The development of APKMirror Installer and its infrastructure required significant time and resources. To support ongoing development, the app and site are ad-supported. Users can subscribe to remove ads and unlock additional features.
