Originally written in 1706, Matthew Henry's six-volume Complete Commentary provides an exhaustive verse-by-verse look at every verse in the Bible. This app brings this timeless resource to your fingertips.
Matthew Henry's well-known six-volume Exposition of the Old and New Testaments (1708–1710), also known as the Complete Commentary, offers an exhaustive verse-by-verse study of the Bible, covering the entirety of the Old Testament, and the Gospels and Acts in the New Testament. Following the author's passing, the work was completed (Romans through Revelation) by thirteen other nonconformist ministers, drawing partly from notes taken by Henry's listeners, and edited by George Burder and John Hughes in 1811.
Matthew Henry's commentaries are primarily exegetical, focusing on the scripture text as presented. His main intention is explanation for practical and devotional application. While not a work of textual research (for which Henry recommended Matthew Poole's Synopsis Criticorum), Henry's Exposition provides a critical account of the original text as understood in his time, alongside practical applications. It was considered both sensible and stylish, making it a valuable commentary for devotional use.
Famous evangelical Protestant preachers such as George Whitefield and Charles Spurgeon used and highly recommended the work. Whitefield read it through four times – the last time on his knees. Spurgeon famously stated, "Every minister ought to read it entirely and carefully through once at least."
Henry's lasting reputation is built upon his renowned commentary, An Exposition of the Old and New Testaments (1708-10), also known as Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible. He completed the commentary up to the end of the Acts during his lifetime. After his death, other like-minded authors completed the remaining books, drawing from Henry's manuscripts. This work has long been celebrated as the best English commentary for devotional purposes, and the expanded edition was initially published in 1896. Instead of focusing solely on critical exposition, Henry emphasizes practical suggestions, and his commentaries contain a wealth of profound truths.
