**What is a Handpan / Hang?**

The Hang is a remarkable musical instrument from the idiophone family, originating in Switzerland. Its distinctive 'UFO shape' is formed by two nitrided steel shells joined together, creating a hollow acoustic chamber that acts as a Helmholtz resonator.

The top side, called the "Ding", features a central note and seven or eight surrounding 'tone fields'. Each field is carefully hammered to produce a specific pitch.

The bottom side, or "Gu", has a hole in the center that produces a deep, resonant bass note when the rim is struck.
