The Description of WiFi/WLAN Plugin for Totalcmd
Site Editorial Commentary:WiFi transfer plugin and standalone app (does not require Total Commander)
WiFi/WLAN Plugin for Total Commander is a versatile tool that functions as both a plugin and a standalone application for seamless file transfers over WiFi. While primarily designed as a plugin for Total Commander, it operates independently, offering flexibility for various use cases.Important note: This app is ad-free. A link to Total Commander may be displayed in the upper right corner when accessing files via a web browser, which may be perceived as an ad by the Play Store.
This plugin enables direct HTTP connections over WiFi/WLAN between Android devices or between an Android device (acting as the server) and any device with a web browser or WebDAV client. It establishes a local Web+WebDAV server, with the server URL accessible via a QR-Code or manual entry.
Beyond its Total Commander integration, the app supports standalone usage. You can share files, text, or URLs from any file manager using the "share" function, initiating a server and displaying the corresponding URL and QR-Code.
It's an excellent solution for local data transfer between Android devices without relying on cloud services, ensuring your data remains within your secure wireless LAN network.
Note: Both devices must be on the same WiFi network. If the sender lacks WiFi connectivity, the tool can create its own access point or initiate a WiFi Direct connection, allowing other devices to connect for data transfer. Scanning the QR-Code from another instance of the WiFi plugin establishes an automatic connection that closes upon disconnection.
Due to Android 10 and later restrictions, the "Location" permission is required for creating a WiFi Direct server. The app requests this permission only when initiating a WiFi Direct server and is not necessary for standard operation on the same network.
Starting with version 3.4, a fixed path with username/password login is available instead of a random path. It employs DIGEST authentication for secure password transmission. This login method is recommended for regular connections to the same device, such as mounting the device as a drive in Windows or MacOS.
What's New
3.4:
- option to use fixed path /8888 with user name/password (DIGEST authentication)
- support WiFi direct server on Android 10, requires LOCATION permission (only requested when needed)
- preserve timestamp on upload (to internal memory on Android 9 and 10 only)
- configurable port number
3.3:
- show notification during active connections to keep connection alive
- web client: allow to download zip with utf-8 names
- fixes to handle power saving functions
